BBC: “The amount of plastic now outweighs all land and sea creatures” – YOU can change it!

According to BBC’s recent Instagram post the amount of plastic now outweighs all land and sea creatures currently alive. This is astonishing, given that a big part of human population is already aware of the impact that plastic has on the environment as well as our health.

Despite notable efforts to stop utilizing plastic, it’s still used in many ways – for example as wrapping material.

All you have to do is walk into a supermarket and take a look around to see how many products are still wrapped in plastic. Same goes for some sport gear and garments, especially when ordered online.

Plastic is also used in the fibres of many clothes and accessories. Synthetic fabric (such as polyester and nylon) are made of plastic.

“In addition to being a by-product of the fossil fuel industry, they [synthetic fabrics] shed microplastics when washed, entering waterways and harming aquatic life.”

What can we do to change this…?

As consumers we have the power to make an impact simply by making more sustainable choises while shopping. Our actions have an impact, no matter how small they might seem.

At the moment many big companies are still milking “the cash cow” by selling products that are not sustainable, nor ethical. This goes on as long as we keep our eyes closed and don’t give any thought to sustainability of the products we purchase.

As consumers we have the power to influence on the products that are on the market. Support brands that use minimal amount of plastic.

However, it does take some time and effort to find out which brands and products actually make an effort to respect the nature. Sometimes you can see it already just by looking at the product, but not always.

This is exactly why Gaissa Media exists. Gaissa Media is your guide in the brand jungle – we help you find more sustainable gear for your next climb, hike, run or flight.

To be able to enjoy the mountains to the fullest, we must do our part to protect this magnificent playground.

Here’s a short list of our favourite brands and webshops to get you started with:

Notice that both Patagonia and Outerknown encourage you to buy second hand and recycle the clothes you don’t wear anymore. Both brands offer an online platform to buy and sell second hand products.
